Do You Really Want to Buy a House, or Have Other People Convinced You That You Should?

Being a homeowner is often equated with being a responsible and successful adult. You have probably gotten that message, either directly or indirectly, from family and friends.

All too often, people make important decisions based on others’ expectations instead of figuring out what’s right for them. Before you buy a house, ask yourself if that’s what you truly want and if now is the right time.

Is Buying a House Better Than Renting?

You might have heard that renting is like throwing away money and that you’d be better off owning a house. That’s an oversimplification. Sometimes owning a house is the better option, and sometimes renting makes more sense.

A lot depends on where you live. In some areas, it costs more to rent a house than it costs to own one. In other places, renting is more affordable. Research local listings to figure out if you would be better off buying or renting.

Can You Buy a House Now?

If you want to buy a home, you’ll most likely have to take out a mortgage. To get a loan with a competitive interest rate, you’ll need a stable income, good credit, and a debt-to-income ratio that meets a lender’s guidelines. You’ll probably have to make at least a small down payment.

You understand your finances better than anyone else. Only buy a house if and when it makes sense for you. If necessary, take the time to save more money for a down payment or reduce your credit card debt before you start looking for a home.

Can You Afford to Own a House?

Many people focus on upfront costs and are surprised by the ongoing cost of homeownership. If you buy a house, you’ll have to pay for a mortgage, property taxes, and homeowners insurance. You might have additional expenses, like homeowners association fees and private mortgage insurance.

Maintenance and repair costs can vary widely. A major project, such as replacing the roof, can cost thousands of dollars. You’ll have to set aside money for repairs so you’ll be ready when problems inevitably arise.

Can You Handle the Other Burdens of Being a Homeowner?

When people dream of owning a house, they tend to think about hosting holiday celebrations and making memories with loved ones. Being a homeowner also means spending weekends mowing the lawn and making minor repairs. It means not knowing when an appliance will break down or how much it will cost to fix or replace it. If you’re not prepared to put in the time to care for a house, or if you don’t want to deal with that level of stress and uncertainty, you might be better off renting.

What Are Your Long-Term Goals?

If you want to become a homeowner, ask yourself if now is the right time. Buying a house and selling it in a few years can be a hassle, and you might lose money if housing prices go down.

If you think you’ll move in the near future, renting can give you the flexibility you need. You can buy a home later, when you’re ready to settle down.
